Earlier today we discussed how Roy Thomas built a whole issue of Incredible Hulk around an essay by Tom Wolfe, complete with cameo by the author.
Well, that wasn't Wolfe's first appearance in a Marvel comic. Wolfe wrote about Marvel and the head-trippy moments of Doctor Strange in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (hey, it was the 60s!!). Roy saw it and started a correspondence with Wolfe, which resulted in this cameo in Doctor Strange #180 (1696):
That reference is to the title of Wolfe's first collection of non-fiction essay. The full title of the titular essay is "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored (Thphhhhhh!)
Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (Rahghhh!) Around the Bend
(Brummmmmmmmmmmmmmm)…" Like I said, the 60s!! That was how we rolled!!
Anyway, that's how you got into a Marvel Comic back then...write something that caught Roy Thomas' pop culture eye!!
