In 1968, due to various defections, at one point the Avengers roster was down to just 3 heroes: Hawkeye, Goliath and the Wasp.
Well, some people kind of thought it should stay that way!
Three members is perfect??
Alas for Ralph Duby, Jr., between the time he sent the letter and it was published (in Avengers #53 (1968)), the Black Panther joined the team. And in a few issues, the Vision (who is radder than you think) would be joining. So it was going to be 5 for a bit, and though there would be many a fluctuation and special mission and the whatnot, the membership would never drift so low again, at least on a permanent basis.
Marvel's response:
Of course, now that there are 113 Avengers, Ralph's probably very unhappy...
