The depressing trend of resurrecting recently deceased heroes, and thus rendering death a ridiculously overused and non-serious plot device, can be traced to this letter in Avengers #19 (1965):

Modern comics writers and editors...you'll note that Stan rejected the idea, and called those who are wanting to bring back the dead "ghouls." Take note next time you foist a fake death upon us, please.

This is a trend that I am heartily heartily sick of. The death part that is. If the writers don't want to use a character, then don't use that character, but don't just gratuitously kill them off. It's lost whatever impact that it originally had...and then you lose what could be a great character to write about for some other writer.
