As promised yesterday,we have the solution to the riddle of this cover:
Red kryptonite has created one vulnerable spot on Superman's body. So he encases his hand in a steel box, and holds a press conference to tell the public what's going on.
But a gang of crooks figure that Superman is bluffing, and is just using the box to distract attention from his real vulnerable spot!
And so:
Well, they don't give up, and they spend the rest of the day shooting poison arrows at various body parts!
No success--which means:
Our bad guy creates a Kobayashi Maru for Kal-El, so he has to take off the box. And son enough:
Well, that's it, kiddies.
Oh, come on--it's the Silver Age--Kal-El is alive, and has a lot of exposition to dump!
D'oh!!
Kudos to commenter George Chambers for realizing the depth of DC's commitment to "irony."
