Bold Fashion Choices--Supergirl, The Quest For Peace

This is the fourth time that Supergirl has appeared in Bold Fashion Choices, which is a record. I'm not sure why Kara Zor-El has been such a magnet for terrible costumes. Part of it was having a "boring" costume that was just a variation on her cousin's, part of it was DC trying to encourage female readers by having constant contests to invent new costumes for her.

And, of course, part of it was the era--the late 60s and early 70s. As we've seen each time that Supergirl has appeared in Bold Fashion Choices, the early 70s were an...interesting time in super-heroine fashions.

Which leads to Adventure Comics #409 (1971). Prepare to have your eyes melted out of your heads.

The first story in the issue is a Mike Sekowsky/Mike Sekosky joint, and features one of the most hideous Supergirl costumes ever. And with Kara, that's saying something!!

Holy schnikes.

Now, most of this story took place underwater, and the colorist apparently decided that means everything must be blue or green or greenish-blue or bluish-green, so we get very few good looks at Kara's outfit. But please note:

**the Robin booties
**the large bright yellow belt
**the half-skirt thingie over the pants (or tights)
**the pants/tights and their bright yellow stripe up the front of the leg
**the red gloves

Yeesh.

The second story, by E. Nelson Bridwell and Art Saaf, takes us back to the future:

Oh, thank you, Margret Berg of NY, NY, for this sure-looks-like-Mike-Grell-designed-Legion-ware. And people complained about what modern Supergirl was wearing...neo-Kara's bare midriff and short skirt have nothing on this. Let's take some more looks, just to make sure that we fully understand exactly how much skin Kara is showing:

Supergirl--an eternal fashion mistake. Keep on keepin' on, Kara. I'm certain we'll see you here again soon.
