Long story short--Annihilus has taken over the Baxter Building, and is sending out an ever-expanding and impenetrable "null field" from there in a bid to destroy two universes!
How impenetrable? Let's ask Thor!
Oh, dear.
1980s punch line: "Don't worry, Thor, it happens to all of us sometimes!"
2017 punch line: "Wow, you really are unworthy!"
The Vision doesn't have much more luck:
D'oh!!
So who you gonna call? How about the one, the only Monica Rambeau--CAPTAIN MARVEL!!
I'm just sayin', Marvel picked the wrong Captain Marvel for their Captain Marvel movie.
From Avengers #233 (1983)

No arguing with that!
It's true. And she was great in Nextwave.
Man...I really miss Nextwave.
I disliked Monica when she was introduced, for several reasons. First, it seemed that her nom de guerre was chosen simply so Marvel could keep the rights to the name "Captain Marvel." Second, she was so obviously Roger Stern's pet character: her first appearance reduced Spider-Man to an "also featuring" role in his own Annual, and she was made an Avenger, and then leader of the Avengers, with indecent haste. Thirdly, her powerset was off the chain for Marvel, making characters such as, for example, Quicksilver completely superfluous. This also meant that many writers had no idea what to do with her. But trust Byrne to use her to her full potential - a gamma ray laser! That puts her in Silver Surfer class, with her only limitation being the amount of body mass she could transform to energy.
... Maybe if Byrne had written her more, she might have grown on me.
