I've never read that story, so this is just a guess based on her goofy last name, but was she actually a Luthor in disguise?
Not in disguise. When she was a toddler, their family was made pariahs by Lex's infamy, so they changed their name to Thorul and moved away. But the parents were killed in a car crash, she was put up for adoption, and Lena never knew she had a super-villain brother.
Oh, yeah, and she had ESP.
I think secretariat is a fine and noble profession, and really not as easy as it sounds. Those women (primarily) are really the ones that run the show in many institutions. It could be someone's ambition, depending on what kind of education they got.
It's just... that's a really specific ambition she has there. "Now I have to take what the CIA will give me."
