The Best Cover You've Never Seen--Superman #289 (1975)

Sadly, the ghostly figure doesn't turn out to be a dimensionally-shifted Terra-Man...

Superman & the horseman by Curt Swan & Bob Oksner. The rest of the cover, according to GCD, is "Mostly photo cover, with photos of Bob Rozakis, Cary Bates, Jack C. Harris, Carl Gafford, and E. Nelson Bridwell. Julius Schwartz's records credit this cover to Jack Adler & Staff, indicating the cover was pasted up from other sources."

Just Imagine...Captain America!!

Yeah, I'm riffing on that series that Stan and DC did a few years ago where The Man "re-imagined" various DC heroes.

Well, Marvel can play that game (sort of). As part of Captain America #616, the 70th Anniversary Issue, they present a couple of "commission" pieces of Cap drawn by some surprise artists.

First up, a glimpse of what might have been if we had ever gotten the Batman/Captain America Brave & The Bold story that you know Bob Haney would have turned into something completely insane and yet perfect, with art by this guy...

Then, we can imagine Cary Bates scripting an issue of DC Comics Presents, as drawn by this fellow...

And then, in the cognitive dissonance department, there's a new Cap story drawn by Paul Grist:

Hey, I love Grist, and I know this is just his style. But if Captain America is this scrawny in his prime, what the hell did Steve Rogers look like before the Super Soldier Serum??

That said, I'm now completely in love with the though of a Paul Grist-drawn Invaders series. Marvel, make this happen!!
