Man, the
1980s were a
simpler, more innocent time. Take, for example this letter from
Avengers #213 (1981):

Gee,
Tim Stokely, how
silly you were.
Of course Spider-Man is too much of a loner to join a team, and obviously he's far too busy with his own adventures to join even one (let alone
TWO)
Avengers teams.
Why, I'm reminded of the time
Captain America "
guaranteed" that the Avengers would
never accept
Wolverine as a member (in
Captain America Annual #8 (1986)):

See? It could
NEVER happen.
Or, take the cover to
Avengers #221 (1982), as the Avengers had a new recruitment drive (only ten issues after the last one,
but who's counting,
Jim Shooter?):

Yes,it's
ridiculous to contemplate that most of the people on this cover could ever be Avengers. I mean,
Spider-Woman?
Doctor Strange?
Daredevil?
Invisible Girl?
Luke Freakin' Cage? At least they could have given us some
realistic choices...
Oh,
poor, sweet, naive 1980s. How I miss you....
