It's also my least favorite kind of summoning. Kid Eternity calls someone, they shrug, say they can't do anything, and leave. Why are you wasting our time with it, then? And what kind of god are you, Vulcan, if you can't stop a volcano, even for a few minutes?
Anyway, the question remains: Why are the villagers refusing to flee from the lava?
You hav to feel a touch uncomfortable able summoning their conqueror to help these people, but at least the story acknowledges that tension, with Cortes seeming to seek a bit of redemption.
Less forgivable is depiction of rural Mexicans in 1948 as so superstitious that they won't even get out of the way of an erupting volcano because "it's the will of the gods." Seriously?
