Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #1 (1995):

Yup,
Ben Reilly was the
original Spider-Man. Yup, Untold Tales chronicled Ben's adventures as Spider-Man. Yup.
Uh-huh. Really.
Maybe you jumped the gun on that one a little bit,
Assistant Editor Glenn Greenberg...
Man, I'm so glad I wasn't reading Spider-Man in the
90s...

Did he jump the gun? I thought Marvel did intend that to be the next 'truth'?
Marvel, for all of 10 minutes, did intend for Ben to have been the one true Spider-Man, and Peter the clone. But within a couple of months of that column in Untold Tales was written, the myriad behind the scenes editorial changes/firings/cmind changes/mutinies resulted in that being changed, and Ben was the clone again, and Peter was and always had been Spider-Man.
Indeed - so when he wrote the column, he likely wasn't jumping the gun. That things changed back doesn't mean he was wrong at the time, no?
