Yes, it's all in good fun to make fun of the foibles of bad uses of lettering in comic books.
But I am compelled to point out that it's hardy a new phenomenon:
That's from Super Spy #1 (1940)...and it's actually reprinting an older story, from 1939!!
Granted, back then they were still figuring out the basic grammar of the medium, so we should cut our unknown creators a bit of slack.
Still, that is one hell of an info-dump, ain't it? I guess that's what happens when you wait until the very last panel of your story to explain every element of your mystery...
And that's kind of a shame, because it was sort of a neat-o story, with an evil professor posing as a mummy, going around hypnotizing heiresses...
...and detectives...
...and using fake mummies to smuggle lots and lots of "dope" into the country:
Golden Age, people...Golden Age!!
