The Best Cover You've Never Seen--Crime Does Not Pay #63 (1948)!!

OK, OK, it may not be that great a cover by conventional artistic standards...

...but you have to love how it's combining a romance cover with slang-filled crime dialogue:

"Why should I moth around a hot potato like him?" My god, that's just perfect in 12 different ways!!

Your mileage may vary...

  1. Six MILLION readers monthly!! Even if actual circulation figures were half that... crime comics were HUGE pre-Wertham, huh?

  2. George, that 6 million number was, well, sort of an exaggeration, if not an outright lie:
The trick is, as you might have already guessed, is that they don’t say 5,000,000 copies sold, only 5,000,000 readers. They came up with their numbers under the theory that for every copy of their comic that was purchased, it was passed around to at least six other people, so if they were selling one million copies, they actually had 6,000,000 readers.
