Admit it...
...you just want to punch this guy in the face, don't you?
[OK, OK, I should include some actual information here. Smilin' Jack was a newspaper comic strip, created by Zack Mosley, that ran for 40 years. The character had a radio show in 1939, a movie serial in 1943, and this comic book in 1944.
But you still want to smack that smug puss, don't you?]
From Four Color #36 (1944)
I'm a great fan of Golden Age newspaper strips, and I believe I can say my tastes are pretty wide-ranging. Hell, I even like some Little Orphan Annie stories. But I HATE Smilin' Jack. Always have. Don't like the stories and can't stand the art. It amazes me that another artist (Boody Rogers) would deliberately choose to imitate Mosley's style. I know the strip was quite popular and, like many GA strips, lasted way longer than it should have, but I never understood its attraction. BTW, if you want to paste him in the mug, you must check out the story where he powders his hair white and wears "unmanly" perfume to pose as a gangster. Pow--right in the kisser!
ReplyDeleteThe Adventures of Smilin' Jack is one of my favorite serials ever, but yeah... that version in the picture needs a smackin'.
