Remember when DC would give you a comic full of Golden Age stories for a quarter?
No Omnibi, no Absolute, No Chronicles, No Archives, no $100+ book with pages out of order or a binding that breaks easily...just a heapin' helpin' of reprint goodness!!
After all, that's what helped build up the awareness of (and love for) some of the more obscure DC characters--all the damned reprints they ran in the 60s and 70s, cheap enough for everybody to read without skipping a car payment! Continuity confusion be damned!
And DC knew that people would want to read 'em:

I may be old, but my parents were too young to have read the first Mxyzptlk story (from 1944).
