In fact, I was an improv referee for 20 years, most of which were during the time when the tradition was to throw things at the ref when you weren't happy with a decision. Granted, there have been a lot of nerf balls over the years, but I'm old enough to remember when it was the kind of rubbers you'd put over your shoes in the rain - whatever those are called in English - and we once had to take a ref to the hospital after he got one in the head and flipped over the side of the rink.
