THIS REALLY HAPPENED:

From Howard The Duck #30 (1979)

  1. I miss Steve Gerber. For whatever reason, here on the SW side of Chicago, I could no longer find copies of HTD after that Ringmaster of Crime issue.

  2. And I'm pretty sure that is Gene Colan on the art.

Man, I've got to go and look up my Dr. Bong issues!

  3. Actually, Wayne, the Ringmaster story was Gerber's last on Howard. Bill Mantlo finished the run, including this Iron Duck story, and was the main writer when Howard went to the B & W magazine route.

  4. Mantlo's Howard stories never quite reached the levels of madness that Gerber's did, even if the B&W Howard the Duck magazine allowed things that couldn't be done in the four-color book (the more, shall we say, pointed version of Howard and Beverly's relationship).

  5. Thanks for the info, snell. I had forgotten Mantlo taking over the last few issues of the comic even though I never owned them. Perhaps a lower circulation left my area with a fair amount of HWD to go around...

  6. I'm pretty sure that Howard means "whopper" instead of Big Mac...those are the ones that are flame-broiled, aren't they?
