Manic Monday--Most Hated Professions In The 1940s

We've already seen that, in the 1940s, forensic science didn't get any respect:

But that wasn't he only reviled career choice in the Golden Age. Because heaven help you if you were a pharmacist:

Man, when you can't even get respect from the mayor's secretary and the city comptroller, I guess you really were a wuss, huh?

The moral, apparently: your life sucked you if you majored in the sciences in the 1940s. Sure, Bulletman and the Black Terror could secretly be studs and get the girls...but pity all the other, non-secret-identity-having scientists and pharmacists out there. Objects of scorn to police chiefs, secretaries, and city comptrollers, these guys must have lived miserable lives of inadequacy and chastity, if the comics I've read are anything to go by...

Back to the 21st century. For a larf, I urge all my readers to go to their pharmacists today and call them "weak-kneed pill-mixers." Go on, it will be fun!!

Panels that make life much tougher for guidance counselors come from Nickel Comics #1 (1940) and Exciting Comics #9 (1941).
