Well, at least Steve didn't take the formula for self-aggrandizement but out of patriotism and anti-fascism... BTW, the thing did and does have real-world counterparts, e.g. during World War 2 the German armed forces made massive use of Pervitin (methamphetamin) as a performance-enhancing drug (army and air force acquiring over 35 million tablets from April to June 1940 alone, although the use was limited since 1941 due to side-effects etc.) And more recently in the trial of a couple of aircrew who had bombed allied troops in Iraq by mistake it came out that the USAF also condoned (encouraged?) the use of more modern "uppers" by their pilots...
