I-AM-FASCIST-MAN!!!

using murderers to hunt down heroes--your tax dollars at work!Well, by now most of us have checked out the teaser trailer for Iron Man.

The following is from a DC panel at the Baltimore Comic Con, as reported by Newsarama:

Are there plans for any comic books where the bad guys win? Shooter: "Are you reading them lately? They win all the time."
Waid then joked, "Iron Man for instance. That would be one."
The fan said, "I thought Iron Man was a good guy." Waid replied, "Yeah, I did too."

You've got to wonder: did Jon Favreau have any idea when he signed on for this that Marvel was about to make Tony Stark one of the most despised "heroes" in the comics world? Did they warn him?

And perhaps the ultimate question: what impact will transforming Iron Man into a murdering, civil right abridging, politically manipulating, arrogant bastard will have on ticket sales among one of the movie's key audiences--the comic readers??

It's really cool they used the song, though.

  1. I don't think it'll have the slightest impact on Iron-Man's box office. Considering how wildly Tony Stark's portrayal varies from writer to writer in the various titles he appears in (earnest Utopian in one, laughably caricatured villain in another), most long-time fans see it all as a gimmick or ruse Marvel will wipe away with the waving of the magic continuity wand.

I can't help but think that Tony Stark/Iron-Man has become a sort of bizarre lightning rod/pinata for the political frustrations gripping parts of the comic book audience (okay, MOST of the comic book audience)...since so many of the complaints leveled against Tony seem like something I could read in the MoveOn.org playbook.

  2. Of course you're right about the box office...I was just speculatin' out my a$$ again.

As to Tony's lightening rod status, let's recall
A)He did take on Captain America, which sort of makes him the Michael Vick of the superhero community
B)He's going after heroes AND freeing villains, which is going to piss off hero worshippers like us
C)Civil War Front Lines #11. Seriously, the most execrable comic story ever. I think that's what pushed a lot of fans over the edge.

    Plus, he's a murderer.
