Friday Night Fights--Ebon Seeker Style!!

So, it's the Prize Fight round for this bout on Friday Night Fights. And our MC has declared that we must feature "a fight scene featuring a fight where the color black is present and noticeable almost to the point of being overbearing."

Well, you asked for it.

It's a happy, sunny day in New York City, until...

And the Fantastic Four are at the center of it...

The cause??

It's the living black hole known as the Ebon Seeker (a.k.a. Neg-Star, the Dark Dreadnaught, and the Cosmic Shade). Yes, that's a lot of names for a loser who never showed up again after this adventure!

But whatever the name, he's gonna kick the FF's ass...

See what I mean?

Still, it does no good, as...

BEATEN!!!

Black enough for you, Spacebooger??

This story take place in Fantastic Four #229 (1981), by Doug Moench, Bill Sienkiewicz and Joe Sinnott...considering the talent involved, this was one of the more disappointing FF eras ever...

Now is the time for you to go and vote for my fight. Why? Because I want some cheddar. So go and vote!!

  1. Wow, I would never have pegged that as BS's art.

  2. Truly one of the worst times for the FF...bad art [everyone looked deformed and bent over] and odd stories. Byrne couldn't have come along fast enough.

  3. SF--the credits state that Sienkiewicz did "layouts" whilst Sinnot did "finishes." So, given that we're not sure how much BS actually did and Sinnott's style of making everything look like the classic FF, it's not clear how much credit/blame to give BS. But yeah, aside from an odd panel or two, nothing in run really "looks" like his stuff.

Karl--the FF has generally alternated between great runs and terrible runs. It's been that way for decades. Although I feel the Hickman/Fraction eras have bucked that trend. YMMV.

  4. The MO for the FF was often them getting beat, and then some trick ending. Just once I would have liked to have seen the Thing just walk up and beat the bad guy with a simple, solid thrashing.

  5. I remember thinking that the buildings in the first panel looked like stereo speakers. Since BS was still in his Neal Adams phase at this time, I thought that this would be the closest we'd get to Neal on the FF. I was sadly mistaken. I went off the FF, and shortly thereafter, off Marvel.

  6. Is it just me, or does this villain bear a more-than-passing similarity to the Void?

Which would actually make sense and kind of corroborate the whole "make the world forget about the Sentry" business that Reed and the rest of the heroes have been involved in...no?
